His father was a carpenter, he studied at Nijenrode Business School, prior to his Military service. He briefly joined an Amsterdam trading company, which led to his lengthy associations with the Trade Union. He became interested in the political arena and was elected to the PvdA in 1986. He served as Deputy Prime Minister from 1989 until 1994, before succeeding Ruud Lubbers as Prime Minister. During his tenure, Kok established a three-party coalition of the PvdA with the People's Party of Freedom and Democracy and Democrats 66. Additionally, the Treaty of Amsterdam (1997) was established.
