Peacetime Medal of Honor Recipient. He was born in Ireland. He entered the U.S. Navy in New York and served as a Seaman. His citation reads "Seaman on board the USS Huron, for saving three shipmates from drowning." Seaman Carey is not to be confused with Medal of Honor Recipient James L. Carey who served in the US Army during the Civil War, whose home was also New York State.
