Born in Clarendon County, South Carolina to Sidanny Green (mulatto), and an unknown Caucasian father. His mother a single mother of three: Jennie (10), William (7), and Andy (5), found it difficult to carry on alone. She met and married John Wright, and they soon had a son Samuel O. Wright. This union was short lived, for Sidanny passed away when Andrew was only 5 yrs old, and his baby brother (Samuel) was 2 yrs old. His stepfather, John Wright quickly married a young girl named Susan Fordham (13 yrs old), who was not much older than the children she mothered. Andy Sr., loved his stepmother dearly; they remained close throughout the years until her demise in 1987.

At the age of seventeen, Andy struck out on his own, and made his way to Tallahassee, Florida where he work on the shipyards loading cargo. After two years, he relocated to Wilmington, NC and quickly found work loading cargo on the waterfront. There he worked until late 1942, when he joined the Army.

After basic training at Fort Leavenworth, KS, he was assigned to GORD (Greensboro Overseas Replacement Depot), later named AAF Basic Training Center #10, in Greensboro, North Carolina. In late January 1944, he met a beautiful young woman named Mary Cornelia Morrow, as she waited to enter a movie theatre. After a six month courtship, the couple married on Aug 5, 1944, in York, South Carolina. To their union were born five children: Andy Jr, Sam, Patricia, Linda, and Susie.

In 1948, he gave his life to the Lord, and in 1950, was ordained an Elder in the United Church of Christ ministerial field. He was pastor of three churches: Glovers Crossroad UCC (14 yrs), and Wesley Chapel UCC (28 yrs) both in Siler City, NC., and Clinton Memorial UCC (35 yrs) in Burlington, NC. He was in full demand during his ministerial career.

Despite the demands on his life, he remained a devoted and loving husband, father, pastor, brother, friend, son-in-law, brother-in-law, and grandfather. He was an astute businessman. By trade he was a brick mason, carpenter, and farmer. He died after a brave battle with colon and bone cancer. He was loved and highly respected by his peers and family.
