He held the distinction as being the only American to finish first place in Diving during the 1956 Summer Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia, as he captured a gold medal in the Springboard competition. Born Robert Lynn Clotworthy, he attended Ohio State University and racked up an outstanding eleven total Big Ten, NCAA and National AAU Championships. During his first Olympic Games experience in 1952, he received the bronze medal in the Springboard competition at the Summer Games in Helsinki, Finland. In 1955, he was awarded an additional bronze medal at the Pan-American Games. He went on to a long and distinguished career as a swimming coach at West Point, Dartmouth, Princeton, Arizona State and the University of Texas. He was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1980.
