German Politician. Born to Jewish parents, he served as Mayor of Frankfurt from 1924 until 1933 and led a significant expansion of the city. He belonged first to the National Social party, then the Progressive People's Party, and finally, after the German revolution of 1918, the German Democratic Party. Following the Nazi political victory in March 1933, he was forced to resign and fled to Berlin, Germany, and finally to the Netherlands in 1939 where his wife was from. After Germany invaded and occupied the Netherlands in 1940, he was hidden by relatives and friends to protect him from deportation, and possible death. He died in hiding from malnutrition at the age of 76 during Holland's 'Hunger Winter'. Ludwig Landmann Street in Frankfurt is dedicated to his memory.
