Author. He was considered one of America's most prolific and controversial novelists of the 20th Century. Born Philip Milton Roth, he briefly attended the Newark, New Jersey branch of Rutgers University before transferring to Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, to discover "the rest of America." He earned his master's degree from the University of Chicago in 1955. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Army, but was discharged after suffering a back injury. He returned to the University of Chicago, where he was an English instructor while he wrote fiction. His first book "Goodbye, Columbus and Five Short Stories" came out in 1959 and earned him a National Book Award. He went on to pen other works which were considered provocative and controversial such as "The Plot Against America," "Everyman," "Portnoy's Complaint," and "I Married a Communist." In 1998, he earned a Pulitzer Prize for his novel "American Pastoral." He received other honors and awards for his literary work during his career including the National Humanities Medal from President Barack Obama in 2011. He retired from writing in 2012 after completing the novel "Nemesis." He passed away from congestive heart failure.
