German Opera Singer. The son of a lawyer, he started following in his father's footsteps, but soon devoted himself exclusively to his musical education. A baritone, he made his debut in 1869 at the Stadttheater in Magdeburg, Germany as 'Ottokar' in Carl Maria von Weber's "Freischütz". From 1872 to 1875, he was at the State Opera in Hamburg, Germany, then from 1876 until 1883 at the National Theatre in Munich, Germany. From 1881 until 1891 he also made appearances at the Vienna State Opera, the Kroll Opera House in Berlin, and the New York City Metropolitan Opera. In his later years, he suffered from a heart condition and died as a result at the age of 54. Among the roles he performed include 'William Tell' in "William Tell", 'Lord Ruthven' in "Der Vampyr", 'Hans Helling' in "Hans Helling", 'Der Holländer' in "Der fliegende Holländer", 'Wolfram' in "Tannhäuser", 'Hans Sachs' in "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg", 'Wotan' in "Der Ring des Nibelungen", 'Graf Luna' in "Der Troubadour", and 'Werner Kirchhofer' in "Der Trompeter von Säckingen".
