German Artist. He received notoriety for his nautical paintings and lithographs. A self-taught artist, he was the son of a sea captain who trained as a metalworker and was employed as a technician in the German shipyards. He then transitioned to drafting and began receiving commissions for his work. From 1892 until 1929 he created over 1,200 illustrations for various forms of media and advertising. His work gained the admiration of German Emperor Kaiser Wilhelm II and often accompanied him on his voyages prior to World War I. The last few years of his life were spent in relative obscurity and he died at the age of 67.
