Actor. He was a character actor well known for his appearances on television, film, and on the theatrical stage during a career that spanned over five decades. He grew up in San Francisco, but spent his summers in Santa Barbara acting in local theater productions. He attended boarding school at the Hotchkiss School in Connecticut and Yale University, where he studied English and drama, then entered the U.S. Marine Corps and served as a lieutenant in the Korean War. After an honorable discharge, he auditioned for Lee Strasberg and entered the Actors Studio alongside fellow classmates James Dean and Marilyn Monroe. He would start acting on the theatrical stage in plays such as "Long Day's Journey Into Night" and "There Shall Be No Night". In 1953 he made his television debut on "Kraft Theatre" and later he would go on to appear in many television series during his career. His television credits included such series as "Climax!", "Naked City", "Wagon Train", "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour", "Dr. Kildare", "Court Martial", "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.", "Judd for the Defense", "Ironside", "The F.B.I.", "Mission: Impossible", "Medical Center", "Cannon", "Thriller", "Barnaby Jones", "Falcon Crest", "Hotel", and "Murder, She Wrote". He made his film debut in the 1958 film "A Certain Smile". He would go on to appear in such films as "In Love and War" (1958), "Compulsion" (1959), "A Rage to Live" (1965), "Jigsaw" (1968), "The Bridge at Remagen" (1969), "Escape from the Planet of the Apes" (1971), "The Way We Were" (1973), "The Enforcer" (1976), "Runned Scared" (1980), and "Sudden Impact" (1983). He retired from acting in the mid 1990s. During his career, he received several awards for his acting and was nominated for several other acting appearances. He passed away from complications of pneumonia.
