Robert Arthur Iola of Haverhill passed away on Friday, December 20, 2013, at the Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, Mass.
He was born in Haverhill, Mass., on December 5, 1950, and was the beloved son of Louis and June Iola.
He was educated at Saint James School and graduated from the Haverhill Trade School where he earned his apprenticeship in upholstery.
Prior to his retirement, he was a long-time employee at Northern Essex Community College.
Bobby enjoyed day trips to Foxwoods, playing cards, crossword puzzles, history and geography debates and listening to the Beatles and Jethro Tull.
It brought Bobby great pleasure to shower his nephews and nieces with gifts, the most memorable one being a surprise limousine ride around the city for dinner and Christmas light decorations.
Bobby was patient and courageous and never held a grudge. He was a man of simple means, he did not need the grand things in life; it was the small things that he appreciated.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his brother, Stephen Iola of West Newbury and his wife, Ginger; his sister, Joanne (Jody) Dinges of Haverhill; his sister, Suzanne (Iola) Callahan of Haverhill and her husband, Shawn; nieces, Holly, Genna, Lauren; and nephews, Gerry, Michael and his wife, Megan. He also leaves childhood friends, Mike Sonsava and the late Cliff Clarke.
The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to all the hospital staff and VNA nurses who cared for Bobby, especially his nurse Becky who he considered a friend. He left his family with this comforting thought, “I am going to continue to fight to live, but I am not afraid of dying.”
ARRANGEMENTS: At the request of his family, services will be private. Arrangements are by the H.L. Farmer and Sons Funeral Homes and Cremation Services Haverhill and Bradford. Condolences to his family may be made at www.farmerfuneralhomes.com.
