Musician. As a jazz guitarist, his lyrical style helped to define the trademark of improvising musicians. Graduating from Berklee College of Music Boston, Massachusetts, in 1967, he returned to New York, in 1969 and became a session player for artists such as Barry Miles, Gata Barbieri, Gil Evans, Billy Cobham and many more. Signed to ECM Records in 1973, he recorded his much acclaimed first solo album “Timeless” (1974), followed by “Gateway” (1975), “Sargasso Sea” (1976), “Characters” (1977) and “M” (1980). For the next three decades, in addition to heavy touring schedules, he composed, recorded and appeared on over a hundred albums. Abercrombie remained associated with ECM Records for more than 40 years, firmly grounded in the jazz guitar tradition, while expanding many other musical boundaries and as an influential innovator in jazz fusion. He died of heart failure at age 72.
