A son of Heinrich (Henry) Freckmann and Elisabeth Elshoff, Theodore’s German church record show he was christened Johannes Theodor Freckmann on 17 Mar 1860 at the Catholic church in Billerbeck, in what was then Prussia.

Theodore came to America with his parents and siblings, arriving at the port of New York on 06 Jan 1866 aboard the clipper Thatcher Magoun. His mother died within weeks after their arrival.

The remaining family settled at Milwaukee where Theodore later learned the trade of gold gilding at a picture framing company.

He married "Tillie" Zersk at Chicago, and with her had two sons.

He briefly moved his family back to Milwaukee in approximately 1904, where he appears in city directories and on the 1910 census. They are known to have returned to Chicago by 12 Sep 1918, the day their eldest son registered for the WWI Draft.
