6th Constitutional President of the Republic of Ecuador. He served from October 16, 1856 to August 31, 1859. Prior to becoming president he was in the navy and later became an army general. He then became Governor of Guayas. He was then elected in the presidential elections of 1856 , the first held in the history of Ecuador. He is best remembered for promoting public education and issuing the Civil Code. He approved the abolition of the tribute of the Indians and the settlement of the English debt. He updated the Vicente León school in Latacunga, the founding of the La Unión schools and one for girls in Loja and the creation of numerous other schools. Rival parties forced his resignation and he went to Peru. He returned to Ecuador in 1876 where he lived the rest of his life.
