Roman Catholic Cardinal. Torrejón de Velasco born Cirilo de Alameda y Brea entered the Order of Franciscan Friars Minor Observants at fifteen years of age, professing his vows in 1805. Joining the Franciscan mission of Moqugua, Uruguay, serving among others as editor of journal "La Gaceta", due to political reasons he moved to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil in 1814, eventually returning to Spain in order to arrange the matrimony of two Portuguese princesses to the sons of King Charles IV of Spain. Accomplishing his mission successfully, he was soon named royal preacher and honorary commissary of the Royal Council of the Supreme Inquisition. Minister general of his Order for six years, between 1817 to 1823, he went on to be named Grande de España on March 9, 1818 and vicar general of the Cisalpine family of his Order for another six. Earning a doctorate in theology from the University of Zaragoza in 1818, following the fall of the second constitutional government in 1832, he was named counselor of State. Elected archbishop of Santiago de Cuba, receiving his episcopal consecration on March 12, 1832 at the cathedral of Seville from Cardinal Francisco Javier de Cienfuegos y Jovellanos, the third constitutional government ordered his detention, but managing to escape to Jamaica in December 1837, he set sail to England and then to France to join Don Carlos, pretender to the Spanish throne. Moving to Italy, when the civil war ended in 1839, he reconciled with Queen Isabel II and was named to the metropolitan see of Burgos on April 20, 1849 and eventually to the metropolitan and primatial see of Toledo on August 3, 1857. Created cardinal priest in the consistory of March 15, 1858 by Pope Pius IX, he never went to Rome to receive his red hat and title. Passing away in Toledo, his remains lie at rest in the local primatial cathedral.
