President of China. A member of the Chinese Communist Party, he served as president from 18 June 1983 to 8 April 1988. Prior to becoming president, he worked as a carpenters helper as a youngster and joined the Communist Party in 1927. He studied at the Counter-Japanese Military and Political University and at the Central Party School. Joining the army, he fought in both the Second Sino–Japanese War and the subsequent Chinese Civil War. He played a key role in many Communist victories. He was then appointed Governor and Party Secretary of his native Hubei Province from 1949 to 1954. That same year, he became part of the central leadership in Beijing and became China's Minister of Finance. He was a Member of the National People's Congress from 15 September 1954 – 25 March 1988 and Vice Chairman of the Communist Party of China from July 1977 to September 1982. From 1988 to 1992 he was hairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. He is best remembered for being the first head of state of the People's Republic of China visit the United States. After leaving the presidency, he continued to serve in government until his death.
