30th Governor of New South Wales. He served as governor from 1 August 1946 to 3 July 1957. Prior to becoming governor, he studied at Dean State School, Grenville College, Ballarat and the University of Melbourne. He joined the Australian Army Cadets while in school and was commissioned as second lieutenant in the 9th Light Horse in 1908. He was made captain on 31 July 1911 and then permanent captain in the regular army in 1918. Serving in World War I, he was later made a major in 1923, lieutenant colonel in 1936 and colonel in 1939. He served in numerous posts during the interwar period. In late 1939 he was made major general and was appointed Deputy Chief of the General Staff. 1942 he assumed command of II Corps. In September 1942, he was appointed Chief of the General Staff. He would then become a lieutenant general. After the war, he served as commander of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force in the post-war Occupation of Japan. He retired from the Army in 1946 to become the Governor of New South Wales. He is best remembered as a patron of the New South Wales Society for Crippled Children. He continued to take an active in its affairs for the rest of his life. In 1995 this charity changed its name to The Northcott Society in his honor. In 2004 it became Northcott Disability Services, providing services to people of all ages with disabilities. He was also the first Australian-born Governor of New South Wales.
