Statesman, 10th President of Guatemala. He served from 24 May 24 1865 to 29 June 1871. Prior to becoming president he served as Commander-in-chief and Field Marshal of the Armed Forces of the State of Guatemala. His position in the military and government allowed him to reach the presidency after the incumbent president died in 1865. During his administration he is best remembered for introducing the telegraph and the first studies were made for the introduction of the railroad. He initiated the construction of the Port of San José and the Central Market began in the capital. A monetary reform was implemented along with adoption of the metric system. Some of his reforms caused discontent among much the populace, but was still re-elected to a second term. There were several uprisings and eventually a revolution occurred in 1871. He led the army against the insurrection but was defeated in San Lucas Sacatepequez. He fled so he would not be captured. He then resigned from the presidency on June 28,1871.
