Statesman, 10th President of Serbia. He served from 5 May 1982 to 5 May 1984. Prior to becoming president he fought in World War II alongside Josip Broz Tito for the Yugoslav partisan movement and was proclaimed a Yugoslav national hero. A member of the military, he retired as a four star general in 1982. He served as Minister of Defense of Yugoslavia from 1967 to 1982. From 1984 to 1989, he was a member of the Presidency of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. He is best remembered as a participant in the People's Liberation Struggle, his distinguished military career and hero of socialist labor and national hero of Yugoslavia.
