Swedish politician. He acted as Regent of Sweden during the minority of young King Gustav IV Adolph, beside the king's feeble elderly uncle. He dominated the uncle, usurped the regency position and took advantage of the absolute monarchy under which Sweden was ruled at the time, to promote his own interests with practically unlimited authority. He was the most powerful non-royal person in Swedish history since the 15th-century Lords Sture. He was immediately dismissed by Gustav Adolph and sent into exile once the king began to rule on his own. Attempting to return to a position of power in Sweden in 1810, after Gustaf Adolph had been deposed, he was rebuffed by his old crony, now King Carl XIII, and left Sweden again. The Reuterholm Regime has been widely criticized for his harsh rule and unethical policies.
