Statesman, 1st Prime Minister of South Korea. Beom-seok “Chulgi” Lee served as the first Prime Minister of South Korea from August 1, 1948 to April 21, 1950. Prior to becoming prime minister, he was exiled to China for being involved in independence activities as a teenager. In 1919 he started studying at a military academy. He then fought in the Battle of Cheongsanni, a six-day conflict in Manchuria. He later served as a general in the Korean Liberation Army for the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea. In 1945 he tried to return to Korea but was forced to stay in exile in China. In 1946 he returned to Korea and helped found the Korean National Youth Corps. He helped establish a unitary government in South Korea. He then became the new country's first prime minister. He is best remembered for his unrelenting efforts to establish a new government and organizing that government once established. After leaving office, he served as the Korean Ambassador to the Republic of China and as Secretary of the Interior. At the end of his career and after the war, he served as an adviser on the Board of National Unification.
