President of Colombia. A member of Colombia's Conservative Party, he served as president from 1 April 1857 to 1 April 1861. Prior to becoming president he studied at the School of San Bartolomé in Bogotá where he graduated in jurisprudence and obtained a Law degree in 1827. He then joined a group who planned and executed a coup d'état against Simon Bolívar. The effort failed and he escaped to the Antioquia Department. In 1829 he joined the army of General José María Córdova in the war against General Bolívar. However, Córdova was killed and he hid in the mountains of Antioquia until 1830. Bolivar had died in 1830 and he then becomes secretary of the interior and later as secretary of state serving from 1841to 1845. He was elected as Governor of the State of Antioquia on 1 June 1845 and again, for a second term, on 1 January 1854. He was was elected to Congress in 1849 and later, in 1854. He then became president. He is best remembered for reforming the educational curriculum and instrumental in bringing the Jesuits back to Colombia. He became the only Colombian president ever overthrown by a full-scale civil war. He then spent ten years in Guatemala. He then returned to Medellín, Colombia.
