Professional Hockey Player. He made history, when he became the first Finnish born player (who trained in Finland) to reach the NHL. For four seasons (1976 to 1978 and 1980 to 1982), he played at the center position in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins and Edmonton Oilers. Born Matti Risto Tapio Hagman, he played for three years with his native Helsinki team and was a member of Finland's Olympic Hockey Team during the 1976 Winter Games, prior to signing with Boston and making his NHL debut in 1976. During his rookie season (1976-1977), he scored 11 goals and was a contributor to the Bruins reaching of the Stanley Cup Finals. While with Edmonton, he produced two 20+ goal seasons and topped 30 in assists. After retiring as a player, he coached hockey in Finland. He was the father of longtime NHL player Niklas Hagman.
