Actor. Born Solomon Krakovsky, he was best known for playing the district attorney Adam Schiff on the NBC drama series "Law and Order" from 1990 to 2000. His other well known role was of Dan Briggs, the original team leader on the CBS series "Mission: Impossible" from 1966 to 1967. He served four years in the United States Naval Reserve. After his naval service, he decided to pursue an acting career. He made his acting debut in the 1946 Broadway play "A Flag is Born". In 1949 he made his television debut in the series "Actor's Studio". He would go on to make many appearances in television with such credits as "Suspense", "Danger", Alfred Hitchcock Presents", Playhouse 90", "The Untouchables", and "Ben Casey". In 1966 he was chosen to play Dan Briggs, the original leader of the Impossible Missions Force (IMF), on the show "Mission: Impossible". He was replaced by Peter Graves after one season. He went on a break from acting for the next ten years and in 1977, returned in the television series "The Andros Targets". He would continue acting in both film and television until being chosen for the role of Adam Schiff on the series "Law and Order" in 1990. He continued in this role until 2000 when he retired from acting. His film credits included "A Lady Without Passport" (1950), "Storm Fear" (1955), "A Child is Waiting" (1963), "Yentl" (1983), "Legal Eagles" (1986), "Billy Bathgate" (1991), and "The Firm" (1993).
