London merchant and diplomat. In 1584, he went to Venice, where he stayed for 14 years and amassed a fortune which enabled him to build a house in Bishopsgate, London, in 1600. The house was one of the best examples of timber-framed domestic architecture in the capital. Later he became Ambassador to Turkey and was knighted by James I.

Pindar's house long outlived him;it eventually became a public house, and in 1890 it was demolished to make way for the enlargement of Liverpool Street Station. The Great Eastern Railway Company then gave part of the façade to the Victoria and Albert Museum, where it can still be seen today.
