Renfelt died of disease on Oct 24, 1864, while stationed at Fort Randall, Dakota Territory, where he was initially buried. The fort was abandoned in 1892, and in June 1893, the remains of 63 soldiers and four children were removed and interred in the Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery located in Leavenworth, Kansas.
