Poet Laureate, historian and biographer. He was a poet of the romantic set, along with William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He wrote a number of biographical studies on the life and works of John Bunyan and John Wesley. He published his first poems, in 1794. In 1809, he contributed to the "Quarterly Review", and had become so famous by 1813, he was appointed Poet Laureate. His other major works include; "Fall of Robespierre" (1794), "Life of Nelson" (1813), "Life of Cromwell" (1821), "Cowper" (1833) and "Blenheim" (possibly one of the earliest anti-war poems). His verse is still popular today. Perhaps his most enduring contribution to literary history is the children's classic, The Story of the Three Bears, the original Goldilocks story, which first saw print in Southey's prose collection, The Doctor.
