Poet. He is considered by many to be the greatest Romanian poet of the 19th century. He began writing during the literary movement known as the Junimea, which was founded in 1863. The Junimea society helped establish the modern Romanian culture and in 1867 began publishing its own cultural journal. This journal produced some of the most prolific writers in the history of Romania, such as Ion Luca Caragiale, Ion Creanga, and Ioan Slaviciv. Some of his famous poems include, Venus and Madonna, Ode in an Antique Meter, and The 5 Scrisori. He was buried with national honors.
