Daughter of Caleb Kelsey and Catherine Putnam (obituary). The obituary states Emma was born in Lowell, Massachusetts. US Census records suggest her parents lived in New Hampshire between 1830 and 1840.

Emma graduated from the Nashua, New Hampshire High School, "excelling all others in her class in Greek and Latin." She was immediately offered a position teaching in the Nashua grade schools.

Emma and George married in1862, and moved to Burlington, Vermont. She was president of the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) 1875 -1876. From her obituary in the Burlington Weekly Free Press (Burlington, Vermont) September 08, 1904: "Probably it would not be too much to say that in the ten years previous to 1904 she had arranged and sent to the Mary Fletcher hospital nearly 10,000 boquets of flowers, two-thirds or three-quarters of which she raised in her garden specially for the sick. Her paintings and flower work indicated a love for the beautiful in nature and art."

The family was living at 16-18 Lafayette place according to the 1889-90 Burlington City Directory. Emma lived at 19 Orchard Terrace in Burlington at the time of her death. The Orchard Terrace address is about a block south of the house on Lafayette Place. In 2015, both buildings still stand.
