Charles taught school in Delaware, Georgia, Connecticut, and Vermont before being elected Curator of the Williams Park Museum in June, 1904.

From the obituary in the Burlington Daily News (Burlington, Vermont) January 30, 1908, which includes a detailed account of Charles' civic and professional accomplishments: " Through his keen insight into natural history and his energetic and indefatigable efforts the plan of the museum was entirely changed and brought to the high standard that it enjoys among similar institutions of this country."
