Prince. In English also called Charles. Of the Bernadotte Dynasty, he was the only son of future King Carl XV and Queen Louise and created Duke of Sudermania at birth. His early death, blamed on the malpractice of court physicians but never prosecuted, was a major blow to Carl and Louise and widely noted because of its dynastic implications, making him the most famous baby in Scandinavian history. There was no female succession according to the Swedish constitution at that time, so the death of Carl Oscar meant that the succession was transferred to the branch of his uncle, the future King Oscar II of Sweden and Norway.
