Poor little 12-year-old Helen Rumball of Gridley. She was killed by her step-mother Emma and Emma's brother, Arthur Lewis. After pro-longed deliberation, Lewis was sentenced to seven years in San Quentin; two years later, Mrs. Rumball entered a guilty plea, was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to two year's imprisonment.
Helen's grave at the local cemetery originally read "Our Helen." A local family heard about this story and bought a bigger headstone that reads "Helen Rumball, 1898 - June 26, 1911, not forgotten."
