Philip H. Poindexter is a native of the Old Dominion, where his ancestors, paternal and maternal, lovated during colonial days. He was born in Danville, Pittsylvania county, September 5, 1831, being the fourth of the nine children of Watson G. and Judith S. (Boyd) Poindexter, the former a native of Lynchburg, and of sterling old French stock.

Mr. Poindexter died unexpectedly at about 9:30 o'clock a.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, at his ranch home, The Cottonwoods, three miles south of Dillon.

April 8, 1869, Mr. Poindexter was united in marriage to Miss Mary E. Baxter, who was born near the city of St. Louis, Missouri, a daughter of Tyrie Sappington, also a native of Missouri, his father having located in St. Louis when it was but a diminutive French village. To Mr. and Mrs Poindexter, seven children were born and five of the number are living at the present time. The devoted wife and mother was summoned into eternal rest in January, 1887. Of the five children we enter brief record as follows: Harry T., a graduate of Standford University, California, married Miss May McHenry; Francis S. is the wife of Dr. W.V. Kingsbury of Butte; Emma May is the wife of Frank Cooney, who is engaged in business in Butte; George G. and Walter, who recently graduated from the Rose Polytechnic Institute, of Terra Haute, Indiana.

Poindexter, co-founder of the Poindexter and Orr Livestock Company in Dillon, died at his home Feb. 26, 1911. The funeral was held at the Masonic Temple Wednesday afternoon. While the services were in progress all business houses closed doors and business in the city was suspended in respect for the deceased.
He was born in 1831 to Watson G. Poindexter and Judith Stewart Boyd. He married Mrs. Mary Baxter in 1869. To them were born 7 children. Mrs. Poindexter passed away in 1887, since which time the deceased has made his home at his palatial residence known as the "Cottonwoods", three miles south of the city, with his children.
His death is sincerely regretted and is mourned by the entire community, which has lost one of the best pioneer citizens we ever had.
