Second king of Tahiti. Reigned under regency from 1782 to 1803, then as king from 1815-1821.

He was initially recognized as supreme sovereign by the ruler of Hauahine,Ariʻi-maro-ʻura. He was forced to take refuge in Mo'orea on December 22, 1808, but returned and defeated his enemies at the Battle of The Feipī on November 12, 1815. He was later recognized as the undisputed king of the kingdom of Tahiti.

He was first married to Tetuanui Taro-vahine before March 1797, she died in 1806.

He believed that he lost favor with the Tahitian god, 'Oro and began paying more attention to the Christian god with the help of missionary Henry Nott.

He was baptized on May 16, 1819 at the Royal Chapel in Pape'ete.

Pōmare died of drink-related causes on December 7, 1821 at the age of about 39.
