Roman Catholic Cardinal. Milasul Mare born Iuliu Hossu frequented the seminaries of Cluj and Budapest and later at the University of Vienna and the Pontifical Urbanian Athenaeum de Propaganda Fide in Rome, earning doctorates in philosophy and theology. Ordained priest on March 27, 1910 by his uncle, Msgr. Vasile Hossu, bishop of Gherla, he finished his studies in 1911 and successively served as protocolist, archivist, librarian and vicar and secretary to his named uncle. Military chaplain to the Romanian soldiers in the Austro-Hungarian Army during the Great War, at the early age of thirty two Hossu was elected bishop of the see Gherla of the Byzantine-Romanian Rite on April 3, 1917 by Pope Benedict XV succeeding thus his late uncle. Receiving his episcopal consecration on December 4, 1917 in Blaj, he was named bishop of Cluj-Gherla on June 5, 1930 when the see was transferred to Cluj. The first apostolic administrator of Maramureş between July 19, 1930 and January 31, 1931, he was appointed senator of the Kingdom of Romania and successively assistant at the Pontifical throne by Pope Pius XI on September 16, 1936. Apostolic administrator of Oradea Mare, Gran Varadino, Nagyvárad from August 29, 1941 until 1947, for his firm opposition to the governmental plans to separate the Byzantine-Romanian Church from Rome, he was compelled to leave his see on October 28, 1948. Soon detained as a political prisoner, he was interned at Jilava, Drogoslavele, Sighet and Gherla between 1948 and 1964, being later confined to the monastery of Caldrusani, Moara Saraca, near Bucharest from 1964 till 1970, when in May of the latter year he was transferred to the Coletina hospital of Bucharest due to his ailing health. Pope Paul VI created him cardinal in the consistory of April 28, 1969 but reserved his name 'in pectore', revealing it only on March 5, 1973 nearly three years after his death which occurred on May 28, 1970 at the named hospital assisted by Msgr. Alexandru Todea. Originally interred in a provisional tomb at the Bellu Catholic Cemetery of Bucharest, on December 7, 1982 his remains were exhumed and transferred to a permanent one in the same cemetery.
