Roman Catholic Cardinal. Born to a family of farmers, Michael Logue entered Saint Patrick's College in Maynooth and was ordained priest in Paris in December 1866. Lecturing dogmatic theology and belles-lettres at the Irish College of the city up to 1874, back in Ireland he was named curate in County Donegal before being appointed to the teaching staff of Maynooth of which he was eventually named dean. Elected bishop of the diocese of Raphoe, he received his episcopal consecration on July 20, 1879. Promoted to the titular see of Anazarbe and appointed coadjutor of Armagh with right of succession on April 19, 1887, he succeeded to the archdiocese on December 3, 1887 upon the death of Archbishop Daniel McGettigan, becoming thus Primate of Ireland. Pope Leo XIII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of January 16, 1893 with the title of Santa Maria della Pace becoming thus the first the first archbishop of Armagh to be elevated to the Sacred College of Cardinals. A humble man who led a simple life and had no secretary and few servants, during his tenure the cathedral of Saint Patrick's of Armagh was completed and consecrated. Instrumental in bringing peace in Ireland in 1921, the Cardinal was an expert yachtsman. Passing away in office, he was laid to rest in the grounds of the cathedral he oversaw its termination and dedication.
