Born in Boston in 1884, Emma was the daughter of George Harvey Caldwell who was a Colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War. Her fathers only brother was Brig General John C. Caldwell who was the Adject General of the Maine National Guard. He would later become a US Diplomat in Costa Rica and was a father figure to Emma after her father died. She attended Washburn College and grew close to her Uncle and his children, Charles, Harriett, and Harry. While the Caldwell were living in Costa Rica she visited often and met a man from New Jersey who would become her future husband.

In June 1910, Emma married Alexander (Alex) Harrison at the home of her aunt and uncle in Topeka, KS. Her uncle, now retired from the State Department, gave her away in marriage to Alex who was Chief Auditor of the United Fruit Company in Costa Rica and had family in Caldwell, NJ. After being married, they would relocate to Costa Rica and traveled extensively from 1910-1925 to the US to with their children.

The General, oldest son, Charles Sprague Caldwell also worked at the American Embassy. When Charles died in Costa Rico in 1921, Emma was the nearest relative notified by the US State Department and took care of his burial there. This was documented in State Department records. Charles also served as the State Department official who approved the Harrison's Visa applications in 1912..
