Enlisted at West Troy, New York Oct 16, 1861 at age 25 as Quarter Master Sergeant into Field & Staff 11th Maine Infantry Regiment. Promoted to Captain and Asst Adjutant General July 29, 1862, and transferred to US Volunteers Adjutant General Dept . He served on the Staff of gen John C Caldwell at Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. He received three contused wounds at battle of Fredericksburg, VA. He then served on the Staff of Colonel C Cross of the 5th New Hampshire Volunteers at battle of Gettysburg, PA where he had his leg broken under the shelling that preceded Pickett's Charge. He then served on the Staff of Gen Nelson A Miles at battles of Wilderness, Corbin's Bridge, Tolopotomoy, Spotsylvania Court House,Cold Harbor, Petersburg where he had his horse shot out from beneath him while charging a battery, Deep Bottom, and Ream Station where he had another horse shot out from beneath him. He was taken sick at Petersburg and detailed as recorder of a Military Commission in Washington where he served until muster out.
He was in Ford's Theater when President Lincoln was shot.
Promoted Major by brevet March 13, 1865, Lt Colonel by brevet March 13, 1865.
Mustered out March 20, 1866.
