Asher R. Wirick, Former Tipton resident, Called By Death
Mr. Asher R. Wirick, resident of Tipton a number of years ago, died at his home in Nevada, Mo. Friday, June 22, and was brought back to the McCormick funeral home in Tipton on Monday.
Service was held at Red Oak Grove Presbyterian church on Tuesday forenoon with Rev. Stanley Schlick, pastor of the Tipton Presbyterian church in charge. Interment was in the Red Oak cemetery where Garey-Whalen Legion Post and I. O. O. F. Lodge of Tipton officiated.
Asher Riley Wirick was born Dec.23, 1862, near Tipton, the son of Joseph and Sarah Myers Wirick, and as one of a family of 15 children. His early childhood was spent in Tipton. He later spent 7 years at sea and was a veteran of the Spanish American war, where he served as bugler with Co. F 49th Regt.
On May 23, 1900, he was married to Catherine Thompson at the home of Sion Britcher near Stanwood and has resided at Nevada, Mo. the past 8 years. He was a member of the Maine Lodge I. O. O. F. of Cedar Rapids and a charter member of the Dows Camp of Spanish-American veterans of the same place. He belonged to the carpenters' union for 40 years. Before enlisting in the war Mr. Wirick operated a blacksmith shop and post office at Wald. His record through the years was excellent, honest and faithful and he was a faithful reader of the Bible.
He passed away at his late home at 7:55 o'clock June 22, at the age of 82 years, 6 mos. and 30 days. He is survived by his wife, two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Howard of 139 Dubace Ave, San Francisco, Cal., and Mrs. J. F. Hunter of Marion, Ia.; many nieces and nephews, a number of whom are in the service of their country.
