Rabbi Moshe (Moses) Teitelbaum was born 1914 in Sighet (then Hungary, now Romania). He was a Hasidic rebbe and later on also the world leader of the Satmar Hasidim, which is believed to be the largest Hasidic community in the world, with some 100,000 followers.

In 1936 Moshe Teitelbaum married his cousin Leah Meir - she was a daughter of Rabbi Hanoch Heinoch Meir of Karecska, where Moshe held the position of Rosh Yeshiva (dean). In 1939, Moshe Teitelbaum became the rabbi of Senta (presently in Yugoslavia, then Hungary).

In 1944 Rabbi Moshe and his wife were sent to the concentrationcamp Auschwitz, where his wife Leah died. Moshe was later transferred to the concentrationcamp Theresienstadt, where he was liberated in 1945.

At the age of 91, the Rebbe passed away of old age. Tens of thousands of members of the Jewish community attended his funeral and burial procession in Williamsburg, Brooklyn (were he also died) and later in Kiryas Joel, New York, were the Rebbe found his last rest. The Rebbe was buried beside his late uncle, Grand Rebbe Joel Teitelbaum, for whom the Village is named.
