Nels Nordgaard was born March 25, 1865 at Washington Prairie, near Decorah, Iowa to Nels and Eline B (née Lundberg) Nordgaard. He was ordained in 1894 as a Norwegian Lutheran pastor. On November 27, 1895, he married Augusta Johnson.

Congregations served by the Nordgaards were in Westby, Wisconsin--from 1894-1897; Indianapolis, Indiana--from 1897-1904; Bethlehem of Mankato, Minnesota--from 1904-1919; Calvary of Rapidan, Jackson Lake of Amboy, and a St Peter parish--1904-1920; The Reverend Mr Nordgaard then served as manager of the Lutheran Hospital in Mankato (later named Immanuel Hospital)--from 1920-1923.
