Major General United States Marine Corps, well known Toledo Ohio business man and leader. Walter Churchill enlisted in the Marine Corps at the age of 19. He is one of the few men in military history to move through the enlisted ranks and be commissioned as an officer and rise to the rank of General. Initially he trained as a private at Paris Island, serving sea duty aboard the USS Arkansas. He later became a drill instructor and First Sergeant of the local reserve unit. In 1928 he was discharged from the enlisted ranks and became a 2nd Lieutenant. In 1940 at the onset of WWII he was ordered into active duty as a major and served in both the European and Pacific Theaters of WWII. He remained overseas until returning home in 1945. He was promoted to Lieutenant Coronel in the Pacific theater and received a Bronze Star with one gold star. He organized the local infantry unit and served as its commanding officer from 1946-1950 being promoted to full Coronal in 1948, Brigadier General in 1958 and Major General in 1962. He retired in 1963, after 41+ years of military duty, active and reserve. Walter Churchill became a very successful businessman in the Toledo area. Starting and running 5 one stop shopping grocery stores bearing his name "Churchill Markets." He was known for his work ethic, working his stores 7 days a week, well into his 80s. He was well known by his customers and was always out in the store, greeting them and assisting them. He was called “General,” through his business career. Walter was active in many local capacities as, city council, delegate to 4 Republican conventions, National Commandant of the Marine Corps Youth Physical Fitness Foundation, Board of Directors for the Toledo Better Business Bureau ,and Small Business Association. He also served as President of the National Grocers Association.
