Carolyn Ann Colwell, of Sylvania, Ohio, passed away on Monday, March 6, 2017, at the Northwest Ohio Hospice Center in Toledo after a brief illness, five days short of her 85th birthday.

Born Carolyn Ann Churchill on March 11, 1932, in Toledo, Ohio, Carolyn was the second child and only daughter of the late Major General Walter A. Churchill (USMC) and his wife, the late Dorothy (King) Churchill. After graduating from DeVilbiss High School in 1950, while working at the family’s grocery store after school and on weekends, Carolyn first attended Michigan State University where she became interested in education. She then moved back to Toledo to rejoin the family business and complete her studies at the University of Toledo, where she received a baccalaureate in early childhood education.

She began teaching in 1955, at Hillview School, in Sylvania, Ohio, where she taught kindergarten the first year the Sylvania school system added kindergarten to its educational program. She taught at Hillview for 2 years, but left to start a family with her husband, Lynn. After returning to teaching at Hillview in 1960, Carolyn left Hillview and joined the Toledo school system in 1962 to teach kindergarten at Longfellow School to be closer to home and the family’s grocery store. She remained there for the next 32 years, often teaching double classes, and retiring in 1994 after having taught almost 3,000 children. Throughout that period, and for decades afterwards, Carolyn would be stopped by former students, and their parents, in restaurants, craft shows, shopping centers and other public places, because “Mrs. Colwell” had made kindergarten a positive and memorable experience for both student and parent. Throughout her teaching career, though, Carolyn remained involved in the family business (Churchill’s Super Markets), for many years as the Company’s Assistant Treasurer, and then as Treasurer after her mother, Dorothy King Churchill, retired. That involvement continued until Churchill’s finally closed its Central Avenue store in 2012.

Carolyn also was a member of a variety of social and civic groups throughout her life, ranging from her longtime membership at Monroe Street Methodist Church, to the Pi Beta Phi sorority and the Delta Kappa Gamma honorary society she joined during her undergraduate years, to the Flower Hospital Auxiliary and the Ohio Retired Teachers’ Association that she joined later in life.

Carolyn was preceded in death by both her parents, and is survived by her husband of 61 years, Lynn Albert Colwell; her daughter, Mary Carolyn Colwell McGowan (John); her son, Robert Lynn Colwell (Lynn); and three grandchildren: Carolyn Rose McGowan; Nicholas Lynn Colwell; and Christopher Joseph Colwell. She also is survived by her older brother, Walt Churchill (Lois); a niece (Gail Churchill (Lois Tijerina), of Dearborn, Michigan); and a nephew (David Churchill, of Modesto, California).

Visitation will be Monday, March 13, 2017, from 3 pm until 8 pm, at the Walker Funeral Home on 5155 West Sylvania Avenue, Toledo, Ohio 43623. Services will be held at the Walker Funeral Home the following day (Tuesday) at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at Toledo Memorial Park in Sylvania, Ohio. The family wishes to express its sincere gratitude to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, for the invaluable help provided to Carolyn and her family in her final days. Those wishing to make contributions in Carolyn’s memory, to a charity of their choice, are encouraged to do so.
