When Abel retired in 1875, he was followed into the jewelry business by his three sons. Abel was especially noted as an inventor of tools for jewelry, for which he was awarded a large number of patents. By 1860, he was one of the wealthiest and most prominent men in Attleboro. After his retirement, he was president of the Attleboro Savings Bank for many years and the the North Attleboro Gas Light Company. He was truly a self-made man.
