Professional baseball player. Considered by some historians as the greatest player in the early history of the Cuban Winter League, García played from 1882 to 1905 as a catcher and first baseman for Almendares, Club Fe, Habana, and Club Fé. He won the league batting title in the winter of 1886-87, hitting .448. García would again top the league in hitting in 1889-90 with a .369 average. He would win two more batting titles in 1892 and 1893. Baseball in Cuba was canceled during the Spanish-American War, and when it resumed in 1897, García would begin the twilight of his career. He participated in the first Cuban All-Star tour to the United States in 1900. Though he would play his final season in the Cuban League in 1904-05, he would go on to play for the All Cubans and the Cuban Stars in the United States, and managed the Cuban Stars of Havana in 1908. He was elected to the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in its inaugural class of 1939.
