Italian Nobility. Born the only son of Carlo II Duke of Rethel, and Maria Gonzaga. He succeeded his grandfather Carlo I Gonzaga in 1637 as Duke of Mantua. In 1659 he sold the duchies of Nevers and Rethel to Jules Mazarin. His marriage to Isabella Klara of Austria resulted in only one child.
