Theatrical Actress. She trained at the Conservatoire and in 1872, at the age of 18, she began a successful career at the Vaudeville. Her performance of Madame Bellamy in Victorien Sardou’s Uncle Sam in 1973, secured her a place at this theater. Most of her roles were of the tragedy and comedy genre, due to her style and finesse. In 1897, she entered the Comédie-Française and a year later became a Sociétaires of the Comédie-Française. She played numerous roles and is probably best known for Louis XI (1909) and Rival de son Père (1909). She was given the Legion of Honor at the rank of knight in 1906. In 1908, she had a season in London, where her art was displayed. In 1919, at the age of 65, she left Comédie-Française playing Bérénice in The Herodian. Retired from the theater, she spent her time painting. In 1920, she was promoted to the rank of Officer of the Legion of Honor. She was one of Marcel Proust’s models for Berma. Her legacy includes a bust at the Comédie-Française. Bartet resided at her same Paris home for more than 40 years.
