Mr. Justice Macdonald Dies At Age Of 79
The Honorable Mr. Justice William Alexander Macdonald, 79, retired justice of the Appelate Division of the Supreme Court of Alberta, died this morning at his home, 1936 11th St. S.W. A leading member of the bench and bar, Mr. Justice Macdonald retired from the bench Jan. 1, 1957, for health reasons. He is the brother of the former premier of Nova Scotia, Angus L. Macdonald. His Lordship practised law in Calgary since 1912 and received his first appointment to the District Court bench in 1926. In 1942 he was elevated to the Supreme Court of Alberta, Trial Division, and became an Appelate Division justice in 1944. Born September 16, 1879, at Tignish, PEI, he spent his boyhood at Port Hood, Inverness County, Nova Scotia. He attended St. Francis Xavier University and graduated in arts in 1903 then attended Dalhousie University where he received his law degree in 1910. In 1950, he received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from St. Francis Xavier. After his graduation he practised law for two years in Halifax prior to coming to Calgary where he became associated with the firm of Stuart, Charman and Cameron. In 1914 he formed his own firm with H.S. Patterson, QC. A member of Sacred Heart Church, His Lordship was on the board of the Holy Cross Hospital, an honorary member of the board of the Lacombe Home, a member of the Golf and Country Club and the Ranchmen's Club, and an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Isabelle Macdonald; two sons, Colin Lewis of Calgary and William Bruce of Edmonton; two daughters, Mrs. Michael (Perry) Badyk of Calgary and Mrs. Robert (Mary) Sinclair of Red Deer; 14 grandchildren; one sister, Sister St. Veronica of Antigonish, N.S.; and four brothers, Rev. Stanley P. of Big Pond, N.S.; Oswin of Inverness, N.S.; Donald of Labrador and Joseph A. of Summerville, Mass., USA.

Justice William Alexander Macdonald is a first cousin of Hon. J.A. Bernard of Tignish. His father was the late Louis Macdonald and his mother was the late Veronica Perry who was an aunt of Mr. Bernard, and the daughter of the late Stanislaus F. Perry, speaker of the local Legislative Assembly and represented the district at Ottawa.
