Roman Catholic Cardinal. The fourth of nine children, Isidro Gomá y Tomás was born in La Riba to simple rural folk and entered seminary in Montblanch, later moving to that of Tarragona. Furthering his studies at the Pontifical University of Tarragona, from where he earned doctorates in philosophy and canon law, and at the University of Valencia, obtaining a doctorate in theology, he was ordained priest in Tarragona in June 1895. Named coadjutor of the parish del Carmen in Valls and later, economous in Montbrió del Campo, he lectured Latin at the seminary of Tarragona between 1897 and 1899, when he became its rector, holding the office up to 1906. Metropolitan judge of the archdiocese of Tarragona between 1908 and 1927, in June of the latter, he was named bishop of the diocese of Tarazona, receiving his episcopal consecration on October 2, 1927. Apostolic administrator of Tudela between December 1927 and June 1933, Gomá was promoted to the metropolitan and primatial see of Toledo on April 12, 1933. Created cardinal priest with the title of San Pietro in Montorio in the consistory of December 16, 1935, by Pope Pius XI, he soon became an avid supporter of the National Movement during Spanish Civil War which broke a few months later. A renowned author of theoloigcal and philosophical subjects, the Cardinal was elected member "de número" of the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language at the beginning of 1940. He passed away a few months later at the archiepiscopal palace of Toledo of cancer.
