Poet, Author. Born in Puerta del Golpe, Pinar del Rio, Cuba, he began his career as translator and journalist. He worked in the newspaper Revolución, but after his critics to some aspects of Cuban government, he was enjailed accused of subversive activities. The international reaction of intelectuals such as Susan Sontag, Juan Goytisolo, Octavio Paz, Vargas Llosa or Simone de Beauvoir succeeded and he was liberated. Later, the negotiations of the senator Edward Kennedy, the editor of The New York Review of Books, Robert B. Silvers, Bernard Malamud and Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. getting his departure of Cuba to New York. Among his poems books Fuera del Juego, Las rosas audaces, El justo tiempo humano, Provocaciones, El hombre junto al mar and Un puente, una casa de piedra. Also, he wrote two novels, El buscavidas and En mi jardín pastan los héroes and the essay, La mala memoria.
