Racing driver. Jo 'Seppi' Siffert was born in Friburg, Switzerland and after scrimping and saving enough money to buy a motorcycle, won the Swiss 350cc Championship. In 1962 he came into F1 with a Lotus 24, 1963 with a Lotus-BRM for the Ecurie Filipinetti team, 1964 with a Brabham-BRM. After years struggling as a privateer, in 1965 he became part of the private Rob Walker team. At the end of the 1969 season, he was offered a Ferrari drive but instead was bought an STP-March. After a disatrous season in 1970, in 1971 he joined his arch-rival Pedro Rodriguez - they raced JW/Gulf Porsche 917 sportscars - in the BRM works team. Sadly Rodriguez lost his life during the 1971 season and Siffert himself was also to go. At an end-of-season non-Championship race at Brands Hatch, his BRM slewed off the circuit at Hawthorn Hill with damaged suspension from an earlier collision. Siffert only suffered a broken leg but was to died because of a lack of oxygen caused by the flames. His grave is at the Cimetiere St.Leonard, Friburg, Switzerland.
